Born near Hamamatsu, he lived 1870-1949. At the age of 15, he went to Tokyo to study under Matsuzaki, a carver for Kobayashi Kiyochika. Kiyochika took him into his home where he remained for 19 years. During the Sino-Japanese war he designed woodblock prints, later he worked as a lithographer.

He followed Hasui and Yoshida, however, his career lasted longer than theirs and he lived an eventful life.
